People work at a landfill site. This site outside Banda Aceh and the Tsunami Recovery Waste Management Program has provided a co-ordinated response to the public health concerns and environmental impacts of the tsunami in 2004. The project has removed 20 percent of all tsunami generated waste in Aceh enabling 1,400 families to return to their working fields and fish ponds while also reducing environmental and health risks. The program has built government capacity in waste management, created immediate and long-term employment and provided benefits to the environment.
