Breezy Point, at the end of the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens was one of the areas worst hit by Sandy. A tidal surge caused by the storm destroyed or damaged many homes. 111 other houses were burnt to the ground in a 6 alarm fire started by ruptured gas lines. Tropical Storm Sandy hit New York and other parts of the north eastern United States on the evening of 29 October 2012.
