Mariama and her family outside their home. She lived with mental illness (possibly schizophrenia) from her teens and used to wander, ramble incoherently and expose herself. Her family cared for her for 10 years until she was contacted by outreach workers and began treatment. She is responding well to and is now calm and lucid, though she still has occasional lapses and is weak and has headaches from the medication. Now she is proud that she is now well enough to do some household chores. She is also helped by BasicNeeds, an NGO working to support people with mental illness.
