The Grand Mosque, influenced by Italian Art Deco and built in 1937(38 and 1943 by architect Giuseppe Arata). Asmara is a showcase of 1930s Italian Art Deco architecture. Initially brought to the region by colonial-era Italians, the style continued to flourish into the 1960s as local architects furthered the distinctive designs.
