Mosaic of the Madaba Plateau of Jordan in the Church of St George in Madaba. This is the best known mosaic with a map of the Holy Land with the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. It dates from the sixth century and was probably intended to help pilgrims make their way from one site to another. Thanks to this map excavations were undertaken at the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ and the site of Bethany was uncovered, exactly on the site shown on the map.
