On 8 July 2014 Israel launched its 'Operation Protective Edge' in response to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip firing rockets into Israel. The operation caused high numbers of mainly civilian casualties on the Palestinian side and dozens of casualties on the Israeli side.
