His Holiness, The Seventeenth Karmapa, Ogyen Drodul Trinley Dorje, at the Vajra Vidya Institute for Buddhist Studies. In 1992 a 7-year-old Tibetan nomad, Apo Gaga, was recognised as the Seventeenth Karmapa and went to live in Tolung Tsurphu Monastery, the historic seat of the Karmapas. He escaped Tibet for India at the turn of the millennium in order to continue, without interference, the primary role of the Karmapa, preserving and propagating the Buddhist teachings of Tibet.
