At 18:51 on Thursday 10 September a boat carrying around 50 Syrian men, women and children approaches Kagia beach near Skala Sikaminias on the northern shores of Lesbos island. In the rear of the dinghy, Aysha, who left Aleppo five days before, sits sobbing.

Photographer Georgios Makkas followed the journey of Aysha and her children as they arrived on the Greek island of Lesbos and then made their way to Munich.
