Trainees, at the Taloqan CME (continuing medical education) Midwife Training School, studying a medical textbook. Afghanistan has one of the highest fertility rates in the world. It also has the world's worst maternal mortality and one of the world's worst infant mortality rates. In recent years there has been an effort to establish training courses for midwifery aimed specifically at rural village women. The hope is that this, along with the construction of hygienic health centres, will help improve the survival rates of women and children during pregnancy or childbirth.
