Sijjin Kuang was born in a mud hut on the outskirts of Rumbek on 16th May 2005. His umbilical cord was cut with a dirty razor, which resulted in tetanus. He was not swaddled properly and caught an infection of the airways. He was bitten by mosquitoes on the day he was born and is thought to have caught malaria. On the evening of May 23rd he developed a high fever, which triggered a heart attack and killed him. One in four children in south Sudan dies before five, mainly from preventable or easily treated diseases.
