In June 2016 Rodrigo Duterte came to power largely on the popular promise of a crackdown on drug use and the criminality associated with it. Since then thousands have died, often in mysterious circumstances, in actions given legitimacy, directly or indirectly, by the President who has urged the police to shoot dead people involved with illegal drugs. Critics say that most of these extrajudicial killings are of small time users and dealers, with the big fish still protected by the corruption that Duterte was supposed to have swept away.
