Diamond Rush...A member of the mine's unofficial police force watches as illegal diggers (known as camamgistas) work in the huge Catoba mine, which stretches for two miles along the banks of the river Cuango. Up to 5,000 miners are on site at any one time. The diggers work in teams of twenty, staking out their claim to a patch of land. One of them, who takes a double share of the profits, then sells the diamonds to one of the many dealers and smugglers...Angola is the world's fourth largest diamond producer, generating $650m a year, although illegal mining and smuggling significantly distort the figures. With the country embroiled in civil war for almost the entire period since independence in 1975, much of the diamond production has been in the hands of the UNITA rebels.
