A government fighter runs for cover at the Old Bridge in central Monrovia. A few hundred metres across the river are Lurd rebel positions and the strategic Freeport area. The fighting is chaotic and badly organised..The ongoing conflict in Libera intensified in March 2003 when rebels opposed to the government of Charles Taylor gained territory across much of the country, advancing on the capital city Monrovia. In August 2003 Taylor agreed to hand over power to an interim government and went into exile in Nigeria, which led to the signing of a peace agreement. .Charles Taylor was indicted for war crimes by a UN court in Sierra Leone, and is accused of fuelling conflict in Sierra Leone as well as neighbouring Guinea and Ivory Coast.
