Java Hill, in the coastal village of Elmina, is a district named after the island of Java in Indonesia, to honour returning African veterans who fought in Indonesia for the Dutch army in 1831..Before that time the hill was a defensive bluff, used to protect Elmina Castle, the base of the Dutch slave trade. Abandoned Dutch cannons still litter Java Hill as reminders of that era.
