A Christian cross and other symbolic decorations line a street in a Christian quarter of Ambon in the run-up to Easter. Despite tensions flaring, and leading to occasional violence between the Christian and Muslim inhabitants of Ambon, relations remain relatively stable today. Blood-letting during the post-Suharto (1999-2002) period of national instability let to around 500,000 Ambonese becoming internal displaced people (IDP's).
