When the war broke out, I was constantly being pointed at because I was of German origin. I found that so unpleasant that I wanted to prove myself and volunteered for service."."During the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in 1944, a group of 500 Germans was taken prisoner. One of the guards came up to me and said: 'Your name's Schlegel, isn't it? I've got a German here who's also called Schlegel.' I went over to him and said: 'What are you doing here?' It was my cousin Harry! We talked a bit about the family and he told me that Grandpa was OK. I told the guards that they had to treat my cousin well. Today Harry also lives in America but he still believes that if the Germans had won, the world would be a better place." .. CHECK with MRM/FNA
