Vann Nath, a painter, was one of only seven people who survived incarceration in the notorious S-21 Khmer Rouge detention centre at Tuol Sleng, where over 16,000 inmates were killed between 1975 and 1979. He survived because the Khmer used him to paint portraits of Pol Pot. He is pictured with a self-portrait as a prisoner.
