Along with Tom Hanley (not pictured), these men stood for election on an anti-mafia/anti-corruption ticket in the elections for their Local 1588, the union representing the Bayonne longshoreman. They won and are now running the Local 1588 of the International Longshoremen's Association. The docks of New York and New Jersey have for generations been synonymous with organised crime, with the Genovese family in control of the New Jersey waterfront and the Gambinos in control of the New York side.
