According to his doctor Haiman had a curable infection, but due to lack of anti biotics suffered life threatening complications.
Due to UN sanctions the hospital was lacking many medicines, and the civilians suffered due to lack of food as well.

The sanctions against Iraq were a near-total financial and trade embargo imposed by the United Nations Security Council on the Iraqi Republic.
